Twins Gabriella and Isabella Molina were born prematurely on April 18, 2019. Only hours after they were born, Isabella passed away in her father’s arms. Then, Gabriella spent months in the NICU, receiving treatment for multiple complications from premature birth.
First-time parents Margarita and David were faced with coping with the loss of Isabella while learning to be parents to Gabriella in a very different world than they expected. On top of the heartbreak of losing a child, and having a newborn with a fragile medical condition, they also faced the stress of being over an hour away from home.
When staff at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children referred the Molina family to the Ronald McDonald House of Delaware, Margarita and David immediately found a place that allowed them to be close to their daughter, even in the most difficult times.
“We most enjoy being able to spend time with Gabriella at the hospital. We love being able to hold her and soak it all in,” the Molinas told us. They shared that even though they have been at the hospital, they treasure being able to do all of Gabriella’s “firsts”: things like reading her a book, bathing her, and changing her diapers.
Additionally, the Molinas expressed gratitude for the financial relief that the House has helped bring them. “It would have been very hard to afford everything and come see Gabriella,” Margarita and David shared, noting that they have the flexibility to go home and work when they need to, while still being able to get back to Gabriella’s side quickly. Knowing they have place to stay at the House, just across the street from their daughter, is a relief.
When Gabriella was born, she weighed just over one pound. Now almost five months old, Gabriella is growing every day, and weighs more than seven pounds. Margarita and David are looking forward to bringing their daughter home soon and “really experience what being a parent is like” outside of the hospital.
UPDATE: Shortly after this story was written, baby Gabriella was discharged from the hospital and went HOME with Mom and Dad!
